Smart phone stats

While reading an article in channelinsider on the Amazon Kindle's impact on iPad sales, I ran across the latest data from Nielsen on smart phone stats:

Android 43%

iPhone 28%

BlackBerry 18%

Others 11%.

According to the IT rumor mill, Research in Motion (makers of the Blackberry) may soon be moving to the Android platform, so the consolidation continues.

I continue to be very happy with my now ancient iPhone 4 (< one year old!). I did not feel compelled to run out and buy a 4S as soon as they became available. I have heard numerous, humorous, anecdotes from iPhone 4S users about their interactions wit the new Siri voice-driven interface. I'm going to wait another generation (or two) before diving into those waters

For those using Exchange Server ActiveSync, I have observed that iPhones seem to have a more stable relationship with Exchange than the various Android phones in my clientele. It seems that we have to occasionally delete and re-create the Exchange Server Activesync connections on Andoid phones, when they stop communicating, Not a huge deal, but not totally convenient....

In investigating an e-mail issue for a client this morning, I came across an excellent resource for resolving DNS problems: http://dnsreport.com. This is a free report that analyzes the health of the DNS for your domain.

I was able to determine that the problem was not with my client's DNS information, but with the DNS information for the Arizona state government department that was unsuccessfully trying to send e-mail to my client.

Best cell phone earpiece ever!

I was perusing John Dvorak's Inside Track column in the electronic version of PC Magazine on Saturday, where he had a brief mention of a new hands-free Bluetooth earpiece for cell phones – the JawBone (www.jawbone.com), from Aliph. In particular, he raved about the noise cancellation technology built into the device. I checked their web site, then headed down to the Cingular store on Campbell and purchased one, since it came with a 30-day money back guarantee.

I began testing on Saturday and have been truly impressed. No matter how loud the environment I'm calling from, the person I'm talking to doesn't seem to be bothered by it, and I've intentionally called from some obnoxiously loud locations. Also, it seems to perfectly interact with my phone, which I haven't had on a couple of other Bluetooth headsets/earpieces I've tried.

Highly recommended if you need hands-free telephony! ($119.99 at Cingular)

In this blog, I will be sharing information technology news with our clientele. Most posts will relate to work-related information technology issues, but there will also be entries about interesting digital news beyond the workplace (take the following entry, for example!).

I began a review of remote assistance software about three months ago and have chosen RapidAssist as the program I will be using to get onto your system from afar.
